The Higher School of Architecture of Vallès (E.T.S.A.V.) is situated in the municipal area of Sant Cugat del Vallès. It is a State school which belongs to the “Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya” (U.P.C.). The U.P.C. was created in 1978 and it was constituted from the different higher schools already existent on the Architectural and Engineering areas. These schools had a large tradition and some of them date from the mid XIXth century. The E.T.S.A.V. started to offer academic education in 1974, firstly as a subsidiary of the Higher School of Architecture of Barcelona, and as an independent one since 1979. It is not an overcrowded school, there are 1,140 students enrolled (41% females) and 115 teachers. Its main objective is to train professionals technically competent and scientifically efficient that can take part in the productive architectural activity and worthy to the development of a sustained society. Students can choose among 50 different students’ exchange posts with foreign universities under Socrates programme, or specifics agreements with Latin and Northamerican universities.

The E.T.S.A.V. is situated 10 km far from Barcelona centre. It is very well connected, not only by means of public transport - 6 minutes far from the urban railway station - but the road - highway networks allow the use of particular car as well. It is also quite near the Autonoma University of Barcelona, E.T.S.A.B. and the Architects’ Official Association Library of Catalonia.

There is also a significant very active modelling hall, a library with 14,000 titles.

Accommodation

Right now most of the students live in flats either in Barcelona or Sant Cugat.
A residence hall for students was recently built in front of the ETSAV and rooms for students are available.

The universities in Barcelona have an agreement with Barcelona Housing Service for Students, a specialized organization in youth accommodation, with the purpose of finding accommodation.
Students are advised to contact Barcelona Housing Service for Students either via Internet, e-mail or fax in order to determine the most suitable type of accommodation available (shared flat, rented apartment or university residence hall), well in advance of their coming to Barcelona.
The staff at Barcelona Housing Service for Students will inform you about the different costs involved in each option. If you do this, you will be able to go straight to your chosen place or residence upon arrival in Barcelona.

The syllabuses are scheduled in five academic years which are divided into two semesters each. Lessons are taught in Catalan and Spanish languages. The E.T.S.A.V. applies a new curriculum syllabus since 2010, it is official in the practice of the architectural designing, in the use and consolidation of the scheduled teaching areas.

Educational programme

Students are enrolled in two annual periods: September and February what allows the E.T.S.A.V. to be organised in semesters and the enrolment of 65 students every period. For those students who decide to start their studies in February, they are offered an introductory general course. The studies are scheduled in 5 years divided into two semesters each, and they are organised in two different cycles: a two-year the first one, and a three-year the second one. The learning process is based on problem designing teaching. The two first semesters are propedeutic or introductory to the design itself, the following ones are focused on aspects like:
a) Techniques.
b) Settlement.
c) Housing-dwelling and residential environment.
d) Urban design.
e) Conveyable structure.
f) Demodulation and restoration.
g) The great scale.
h) The final project.

Post-graduate Programmes

The teachers at the E.T.S.A.V. offer postgraduate and master programmes within the different UPC departments. In 1997-98, 231 students of the second cycle carried out professional training periods by means of co-operative educational agreements.
