As one of the largest architecture schools in the UK, with around 600 students and 70 staff, it plays a leading role in defining the national, and international, agenda in design education and research. The department is consistently listed in the top five by the 100 top architectural practices in the UK for the quality of its graduates. It provides a vibrant design culture, ensuring its graduates are not only valued by practice, but are also able to make a critical contribution to the future of the profession.

This year we welcomed around 100 new students from home and overseas onto the undergraduate architecture course, plus 30 onto the interior architecture BA and around 120 onto the diploma in architecture and master's programmes. In addition there are some 40 students on the M.Phil/PhD programme.

Oxford has nearly 40,000 students in the city from all over the world and from all kinds of backgrounds.  Indeed, students make up 20 percent of the city's population. 4- 5 years part time

The honours degree in Architecture gives exemption from Part 1 of the Examination in Architecture of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB).

Taught Masters, MArchD - Applied Design in Architecture, 2 years full time, Taught,

Applied Design in Architecture (MArchD) at Oxford Brookes is for those who wish to become professionally qualified in the UK and provides ARB Part 2.

It is also possible, through the Major Study design specialisation, to spend half of the course pursuing your own research and design programme.

Taught Masters, MArch, 1 year full time, Taught,

The course is intended for students who have completed their professional role-orientated education and wish to undertake speculative design-based research. Thus it is expected that applicants from the field of architecture will already possess an accredited graduate diploma or postgraduate degree in architecture (UK), a professional master’s in architecture (US), or the international equivalent.

Research programmes, M.Phil/ PhD, 3 years, Research,

The undergraduate programme gives you the opportunity to learn about the architectural design process, through the investigation of wide-ranging architectural issues such as:
the representation of ideas
the relationship between human scale and the scale of inhabited spaces
the impact of landscape and cityscape on the design of buildings
the integration of design concepts with material form and structure.
You are encouraged to bring your own experience and cultural awareness to this process.

Course content
Architecture is a creative and fulfilling profession requiring invention, practical skills and technological expertise. An architect must be able to think spatially and communicate their ideas to others verbally and visually.

In Year 1 you will work on design projects and learn the fundamentals of architectural design including designing three-dimensionally, in context, to scale and developing an architectural brief. Design skills are supported by the parallel teaching of representational techniques such as architectural drawing and model making. This part of the course aims to bring all students to a shared level of knowledge, understanding and skill in design.

You will also be introduced to architectural history and theory, the principles of technology, and learn about the architect’s role in society.

In Years 2 and 3 more complex projects are undertaken in the context of individual design units while working to common teaching objectives. Each of these has its own distinctive approach, determined by the ideas and agendas of the teaching staff. At the same time, modules in key subjects such as history and theory of architecture and building technology provide a wider understanding and inform your project work.

During Year 3, you will write a dissertation on a historical or theoretical subject of your choice.

MArchD Applied design in architecture Research into design
This year has a very strong emphasis on acquiring in-depth knowledge of an architecturally important field of study and utilising that knowledge in design. This is achieved by taking one of the six ‘design specialisations’. You must choose which design specialisation is best for you. The specialisations on offer are deliberately highly diverse to cater for the changing nature of the profession in practice. This course produces graduates for the global market and as such requires a high level of commitment from staff and students.

The design specialisations are:

Advanced Architectural Design
International Architectural Regeneration and Development
Development and Emergency Practice
Sustainable Building: Performance and Design
Research-led Design
Urban Design

The 1yr MArch course is an experimentally minded design studio.

The School of Architecture enjoys an international reputation in research, in areas ranging from sustainable design to vernacular architecture. Staff regularly secure research funding from the UK’s research councils, the European Union and industry. This research expertise feeds directly into the teaching programme at all levels.

We offer the following research degrees:

MPhil
MPhil transferring to PhD
PhD direct
PhD by published work.
