Sint-Lucas School of Architecture is known as the largest school for Architecture in Belgium. Its uniqueness stems from the combination of a long and rich tradition with a high reputation in architectural and design education. A large number of the leading Belgian interior designers, interior architects, architects, urbanists, artists and researchers, are teaching at Sint-Lucas.
Central to our programs are aspects of shaping, structuring and signification, i.e. the creative act of designing. We believe that the competence of good designing is achieved through the permanent interaction and the mutual cross-fertilisation of research and design, of creative thought and action.
The social impact of spatial design – from the tiny to the huge, from the toothpick to the city – imposes the highest quality requirements on its training. Sint-Lucas School of Architecture therefore educates designers in a spirit of critical reflection and personal responsibility. Students question their limits and the limits of the discipline. They gain insight into both material and immaterial, physical and social structures. Teaching and research are organised in a spirit of artistic and intellectual openness, of tolerance and inclusion.
Sint-Lucas School of Architecture is an international, dynamic, learning environment that not only responds to society’s ever-changing demands but also anticipates to possible future challenges. By means of design projects, research, exhibitions, publications, conferences, etc., the school actively participates in the academic debate on issues of spatial design.
Sint-Lucas School of Architecture takes the international dimension as the basis for its own quality assessment and positions itself squarely within the international field of qualitative academic education.
The School’s international activities are extensive and diversified: student mobility and staff exchange on a European and intercontinental level, an internationally oriented English-taught Master program in Architecture, international workshops, international research projects, international internships, development cooperation etc.
Sint-Lucas School of Architecture continues to build on its tradition of academic integration of teaching and research to maintain and enhance the School’s quality and international standing. The School works hard to consolidate and to enrich its network of cooperative associations with professionals and universities in Europe, the USA, Latin-America, Africa and Asia. It offers its students access to this international forum of spatial design activities. The School sees this as a catalyst of their creativity and as an added value in their future professional careers.

Sint-Lucas School of Architecture has two campuses, one in Brussels (since 1887) and one in Ghent (since 1862). The Ghent campus is housed in a 11th century monastery, the Brussels building is a concrete warehouse. Ghent is a large provincial city with the largest student population in Flanders. Brussels is a cosmopolitan metropolis, capital of Flanders, of Belgium and – virtually – of Europe, decision centre of many international firms. Both Ghent and Brussels harbour important educational and cultural institutions.
250 staff members (200 full-time and approx.50 visiting lecturers and critics).
Both campuses house all necessary facilities for teaching and research: a large library with many books on architecture and arts, subscriptions to numerous periodicals, video, slide and cd-rom library, a fully-equipped CAD-studio (located near to the design studios), a technical library, wireless network, ...
The facilities are supplemented by large archives on architects and architecture available through sister organisations.

After successfully earning at least 180 ECTS-credits, students obtain a bachelor’s degree. Our professional bachelor’s degrees (Interior Design) prepare students for specific professions. Courses are therefore practice-oriented and include periods of work placement. Our academic bachelor’s degrees (Architecture, Interior Architecture) prepare students for studies at master’s level.
Master’s programmes (Architecture, Interior Architecture and Urban Design & Spatial Planning) are characterised by the integration of education and research and a master’s dissertation. They cover 60 ECTS credits for Interior Architecture and 120 ECTS credits for Architecture and Urban Design & Spatial Planning.
The School offers bachelors in Architecture (academic, 6 semesters, 180 credits), Interior Architecture (academic, 6 semesters, 180 credits) and Interior Design (professional, 6 semesters, 180 credits.
The didactic approach is built around a combination of knowledge-based and problem-based education. The first approach dominates in the beginning and gradually decreases, while on the contrary the second approach increases from beginning to the end.
The professional bachelor Interior Design trains candidates to a level of commencing professional practitioners. The academic bachelors Architecture and Interior Architecture have a curriculum based on an ‘open ended concept’, aiming at developing a solid basis for continuation in a master course on the one hand, and providing candidates with sufficient relevant knowledge for outflow to the job market on the other hand.
Sint-Lucas School of Architecture offers masters in Architecture (academic, 4 semesters, 120 credits), Interior Architecture (academic, 2 semesters, 60 credits) and Urban Planning and Spatial Design (academic, 4 semesters, 120 credits).
The curriculum of our Master courses in Architecture, Interior Architecture and Urban Planning & Spatial Design is built around a fixed core of theoretical courses (Building Technology, Architectural Sciences (History and Theory) and Professional Practice); a track to be seen as an integrated whole of theoretical and practical courses (designing and mixed media) and electives or optional courses offered from within different course units.
Master tracks are interdisciplinary, contributing to acquiring the specific competences of an academic training, enriching the design projects and strengthening the understandings of designing as an academic discipline.
Tracks combine and integrate education, design and research. Master tracks are embedded in the actuality of the research community, specifically within the competence field of the discipline. In that way the department relates existing design expertise to specific research competences present in the department or in (international) networks of educational institutions and research groups.
The Master of Architecture offers tracks in uAD (urban architectural design), eAD (explorative architectural design) and aAD (advanced architectural design).
The Master courses Interior Architecture and Urban Planning and Spatial Design are likewise track-based.
Research Training Sessions (RTS) is a postgraduate 2-year research study for designers, who intend to develop research based on their own practice. It is a unique research study solution for designers in the European context. It was developed in close cooperation with experts of international reputation, who also conduct the sessions. It explores fundamental research issues, which are discussed with the aim to help participants involved in research – research by designing.
The RTS formula has been running internally since 2006 and now we are delighted to open the program to external participants. We want to encourage and welcome architects, designers, artists, also young researchers with a substantial practice record to enroll in the RTS – to acquire research skills, develop an own research project, which may eventually lead to a PhD in design, based on designing practice.

To be able to offer high level education in an academic environment, research and its interaction with education are crucial. Research at Sint-Lucas has since long been developed in line with the profile of the curricula. It offers an intellectual framework and the concomitant resources which develop front-end knowledge, especially in relation to designing. A specific task is to create a research climate that both permits diversity and aims for cohesion, in open communication and with productive interactions with international research partners. Recently, specific training for research by/through designing has been established.
