Faculty profile

The Marseille school of architecture
has the most important number of
students outside the Paris region. It was
founded in 1906. It has specializations
in C.A.D, earthquake-resistant construction,
sustainable development, history
of architecture and urban design. It has
privileged relations with Mediterranean
and Latin American countries.

The school is situated on the Marseille-Luminy campus, adjacent to the natural park of "Calanques" (coves, creeks & inlets) extending to the resort of Cassis. It is also near the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Marseille, which is the second city of France. The city has a picturesque port, an old town & is the centre of the Euromediterranean project which involves large-scale architectural and construction projects mostly along the coast (2.7 km) & in the city (300 ha).

177 staff members (57 full-time and approx. 120 visiting lecturers and critics).

Student Activities

Student society "Archimed" (parties, concerts, exhibitions and cultural journeys), sports club "Ovale" (many football competitions), backstage club (music & concerts, photo/audiovisual club, newspaper "La Charrette".

The curriculum focuses on the architectural
design and the integration of areas
of studies such as construction, humanities,
sciences, history and the arts. It
gives students :
– professional contacts by means of 3
work placements
– a specialization in building, public
space design and urban design.

The core of the programme is the teaching
of architectural design.
During 6 semesters the student will also
acquire knowledge & know-how in history
& theory of architecture, urban design &
regulations pertaining to it, information
technology, history of art,
drawing & painting, and the relevant science
& engineering techniques.
The curriculum is organized around 6
themes :
– space and fundamentals (semester 1)
– the architectural object (S2)
– space use (S3)
– building thinking (S4)
– architecture, town & heritage (S5)
– architecture and manifestoes/theories
(S6).
Students will be expected to pursue a
course of architecture in a foreign language
& participate in 2 work placements
about which they must write a report.

During the fi rst semester, the students will
learn how to work on a complex project in
a team. In the 3 following semesters the
students will choose one of the following
7 options in order to make a deeper study
of a project:
– towns & country in the Mediterranean
region
– town and urban design
– national heritage and urban development
– how to write public space
– theoretical practice of the architectural
project in the urban and environmental
context
– town and architecture : the architectural
project & its links with history
– architecture and sustainable development
technology.
The students will also have an introduction
to research in architecture & urban
design.
Formation à la Maîtrise d’oeuvre (FMD)
The students who wish to become registered
to the French National Board of
Architects have to spend a year gaining
additional practical experience & deepening
their knowledge of construction techniques
and the law relating to architecture
building & urban design.
Master in Architecture and Town planning:
To meet the growing needs of the local
community and the changing nature of
the working environment, this specialization
aims at training students to analyse
and develop the town. A minimum of 4
years’ study in geography, town planning
or architecture is required for admission to
this course.
Master in Building Construction & Engineering
Science:
This course deals with those technical,
economic & legal aspects involved in construction.
It trains future project directors
competent as both architect & engineer. A
minimum of 4 years’ study in architecture,
engineering or science is required for
admission to this course.
Master of Complementary Skills in Computing:
This training is designed to give students
the skills needed to intervene in the areas
where architecture & computing interrelate.
It is open to those students who have
completed a minimum of 4 years of study
in architecture or science.

The school is also home to 4 research
laboratories :
1) Models & simulations in Architecture,
Town planning & Landscaping
It forms part of CNRS (National Centre for
Scientifi c Research).
2) Research into historical & contemporary
changes in architecture
3) Sustainable architecture and earthquake-
resistant construction
4) Interdisciplinary studies in art, architecture
and engineering and technological
innovations.
