Faculty profile

The Lisbon School of Architecture, or simply “the School” as people call it, since it dates back to the 16th century, is now one of the 18 faculties and institutes belonging to the University of Lisbon, following the merger between the classical University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon in 2013.
The scientific areas covered by the newly formed university range from sciences and engineering to the arts and the humanities, and include architecture and design. It has an intake of over 40.000 students and is one of the top European universities in the Shanghai ranking.
ULisboa has several campuses in various locations in Lisbon. The FA is one of four faculties located in the Ajuda Campus in the west of Lisbon, on a hill close to the Monsanto Park, 20 min from the city centre.

The Lisbon School of Architecture offers courses leading to undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in the fields of Architecture, Urban Planning, Building Interiors and Renovation, Design and Fashion Design. It also offers non-degree courses that provide complementary training to professionals who wish to acquire more in-depth knowledge. This wide range of training makes the FA the largest and most diversified school in the country in its fields, with about 3 thousand students. It is also the school with the largest number of foreign exchange students from Europe, but also from countries in other continents with which the FA has exchange agreements.

As a modern school that tries to combine tradition and innovation, FA is a reference institution in the professional training of architects, urban planners and designers, as well as in the production of socially recognized specialized and interdisciplinary research. So, for studying Architecture or Design related courses, our Lisbon School of Architecture is the most well-known and awarded institution in Portugal.

The curriculum provides acquisition of generic and professional competencies.

In the Integrated Master Programme there are two cicles. The 1st Cicle of Study, equivalent to a bachelor, is received after the successful completion of the III year of this five-year integrate programme, then the students acquire an undergraduate degree, completing 180 ECTS. This degree does not allow access to the profession of architect but does allow assisted participation in architectural and urbanistic activities.

The professional skills are obtained after successful completion of the 2nd Cicle or 10th semester of the programme, the Master, it provides the legal competencies to the architecture profession, and the future Architect can then choose the specialization area. In this School the areas available are: Architecture, Urbanism and Interior Architecture and Rehabilitation of Constructed Spaces.

For those wanting to continue education after the completion of a Master doctoral programmes are offered, as 3rd Cicle of Studies. The Areas are: Urbanism, Architecture and Design.

We also provide undergraduate programmes, as the Bachelors in: Design and Fashion Design, as well as Master Programmes in the fields of Communication Design, Product Design, Interaction Design and Fashion Design.

The bachelor study in Design aims to provide a structured and consistent training based on a study plan that includes an integrated set of course units, coordinated by the groups of disciplinary areas from the Lisbon School of Architecture (Technologies, Social Sciences, Drawing and Visual Communication, and History and Theory). The study cycle is structured in six semesters, throughout which we promote a complementarity of disciplines, course units and their respective programmatic contents and exercises. The aims of the study are to provide a comprehensiveness of knowledge in the specific domain of Design and a ‘culture of doing’ that are adequate to both the continuation of specialization studies in the areas of Product and Service Design and Communication Design, as to an effective and qualitative professional practice.

As for the first study cycle in Fashion Design is characterized by a pragmatic approach with a wide spectrum of theoretical and practical programmatic contents, which aim to answer the challenges and the needs of the current range of professional territories related to the fashion industry. Throughout the three curricular years, the interdisciplinarity of the programmatic contents is supported in wider umbrella concepts – namely, identity, function and materialization – which converge towards the development of the following competencies:

  • Understanding of historical, cultural and economic context of fashion and its possible intersections;
  • Establishing connections between theory and practice of fashion design;
  • Applying pragmatic methodologies/strategies in projects;
  • Strengthening the personal vision of the universe of fashion through the creation of concepts and their materialization in apparel, accessories, figurines and styling;
  • Capability of interrelation individually and in teams, and of work organization;
  • Capability of creation and communication of marketing strategies.

The Master degree in Architecture provided by the Lisbon School of Architecture aims to give students a set of competences, mostly of project-based nature, that allows them throughout the teaching/learning process, to recognize, question and experiment with ideas, facts and architectural knowledge of a complex and integrating nature. In this process, students operate on human creations, underlined with ways of scientific, humanistic and artistic thinking and expression, linked to territory – both natural and artificial – that we designate as the space inhabited by human beings. This study is composed by two cycles of studies (mandatory for the professional exercise, by the Portuguese Architects Association). The admission to the 2nd cycle can be done by students that have concluded the 1st cycle in a national homologous study. The procedure is subject to independent applications and places.

The specialization in Urbanism enriches the Integrated Master in Architecture with a reinforced approach on issues of urban nature, contributing to the training of a professional capable of thinking the city as their object of study, having an active role not only in spatial planning, but also in the life, culture and challenges of living in the City. This specialization provides, this way, a broader training, becoming a differentiation and competitiveness factor in the national and international labour markets.

The Integrated Master study in Architecture with specialization in Interiors and Building Rehabilitation is a complete study in Architecture, recognized by the Portuguese Architects Association and by the European Decree 2005/36/CE, with the same academic and professional recognition of the main branch of the integrated Master in Architecture, adding specific facets within the scope of qualification and detail of constructed spaces and the rehabilitation of the built, that might be determining of future success in integrating the labour market.

The Master study in Communication Design aims to develop and deepen the training of designers, capable of addressing current professional needs and to perform tasks in the specialized domain of Communication Design in project, teaching, research and through cultural action. The study aims at the acquisition of knowledge and analytical and reflexive skills, as well as the ability to problematize and think critically in a thorough and specialized way, within a frame of amplitude and versatility capable of responding to current and expectable needs within the professional spaces of area, encouraging productive thinking, and the detection of design and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The Master study in Product Design aims to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and analytical, reflexive, problematization and ‘broad-band’ critical skills, within a framework of amplitude and multifunctionality that is able to address current needs from the professional fields of Product Design. The study also aims to develop and deepen the training of professionals capable to fulfil tasks in the domain of Product and Service Design, in several areas – Project, Design and Innovation Management, Education, Research and Cultural Action – encouraging productive thinking, recognition of opportunities in design, and entrepreneurship.

Interaction design contributes to the creation of products, services and systems, with which we interact intuitively and efficiently. It is interaction designers’ intention to create material and functional conditions for behaviour change in people, both in large and small scales.
The Master in Interaction Design results from a partnership between two schools of the University of Lisbon (Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Fine Arts).
It adds in this way multidisciplinary skills, corresponding to areas of knowledge which have been developed for several years in these Schools, through Laboratories and Research Centers.
Knowledge and research developed are now gathered to establish a distinct training and contribute to professional and research needs in this area of activity.

The Master study in Fashion Design aims to develop a personal view of the world of fashion, by means of consolidation of knowledge and project, reflexive, creative and critical skills, within a framework of experimentation and versatility that is able to address current and expectable needs from the Fashion Design domains.

The cycle of studies leading to PhD degree includes:

– Undertaking a doctoral program, consisting of several courses as the curriculum of the course;
– To prepare an original thesis, specially developed for this purpose, appropriate to the branch of knowledge or expertise and contribute to extending the frontiers of knowledge.
– It seeks to foster a relationship between the three multidisciplinary courses, both in terms of common mandatory courses, or from optional courses.

CIAUD Research Centre for Architecture, Urban Planning and Design

The Research Centre for Architecture, Urban Planning and Design (CIAUD) operates under the respective Regulation, approved in a plenary session of the Scientific Council of FAUTL (Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon).

The mission of CIAUD is to promote the production, development and innovation in scientific, technological and artistic knowledge in the realms of architecture, urban planning and design and to interact with other disciplinary areas as well as with education and with society as a whole.

The Research Centre for Architecture, Urban Planning and Design began in May 2006, with the approval of the respective regulation by the Scientific Council of FAUTL. Until then, research projects under way at FAUTL, corresponding to Research and Development activities, frequently funded by FCT ( Foundation for Science and Technology ), were the result of the initiative of the researchers involved in them, individually or set up in groups.
