Profile of the faculty

The school is situated in a training and living area that is an integral part of the community. Located in an old factory, right in the town centre, the school is in direct contact with social and urban life encapsulating the values of its territory. Saint-Etienne Metropole, with its 450,000 inhabitants offers excellent quality of life thanks to its environment :
- a town with a strong past in art and history that also benefits from a remarkable industrial heritage and is home to a number of architectural achievements that bear witness to modernity.

The school is located in the centre of Saint-Etienne.

460 students (280 Bachelor,180 Master,0 PhD),5% of foreign students.

60 staff members (60 full-time and approx.0 visiting lecturers and critics).

Student Activities

Students associations : BDA : Bureau des architectes (student association promoting workshops, lectures, competitions and social activities) and Archimatos (student association promoting materials for students). Villebrequin : junior team (provisions of services ' on mesure', reduced in loads, while the students profit from a remunerated teaching experiment.) Focus, photography association. Imhotep: international solidarity association created in March 2012 by students of the National School of Architecture of Saint Etienne. She gives the chance to these students to follow a project of the design to the realization. Thus, it allows the exchange of knowledge and architectural competences.


Accommodation cannot be provided but the service of the "vie étudiante" can help the students to find a housing

Installed since its creation in the town center of Saint-Etienne, the Higher National School of Architecture of Saint-Etienne owes his singularity with his territorial context.
Opened on its environment, it integrates in its pedagogy the contemporary stakes of spaces that it close, without losing sight of the fact its centre of gravity: architecture.
The programme is made up of two phases : a three-year (6 semesters) Bachelor degree (B Arch) and a two-year (4 semesters) Master degree (M Arch). Both are accredited by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and by the Ministry of Higher Education.
One additional year of study is needed for professional qualification. The title of architect is indeed protected by law. Completion of this qualification is requested to enter the Register of architects.

The bachelor is the diploma of studies in architecture conferring rank of licence. It allows the students of the first cycle, on the basis of program articulated around the teaching of the project (as of the first year) :
-to acquire an aptitude to analyze architectural and urban space
-to control the questions of representation
-to have a capacity of synthesis and to express it in situation of project
-to acquire the bases of a culture of project.
The first cycle takes place over six six-month periods (total 180 ECTS) and includes twenty-five units of lesson :
– six are devoted mainly to the project Students are introduced to professional skills and knowledge as the basis for design practice. Therefore, the teaching is comprehensive and groups together artistic, technical and social approaches.
– two comprises the obligatory periods of training courses
– one includes/understands a report/ratio of studies and its defence

The Bachelor curriculum is aimed at giving a broad general education in architecture.
The practice of design builds the core of the programme. Each one of the six semesters include an integral design-studio. The knowledge and skills of other disciplines (construction, structures, drawing, humanities, …) have to be implemented in the design process. Through the curriculum project work becomes increasingly complex in keeping with structural, urban and environmental issues.
Lectures in History deal with a broad description of the development of architecture from Antiquity to the present day.
Scientific courses allow students to understand the basic principles inherent to building construction, structures and environments.
A series of artistic lectures enable them to develop abilities in writing and speaking about design, drawing and model making.
Computer-aided design is introduced and proficiency in foreign languages is developed.
A successful completion of the Bachelor grants admission to the Master programme of the School.

The second cycle proceeds over four six-month periods, being worth 120 ECTS and include eleven units of teaching. Four are devoted mainly to the project of which that comprising the preparation of the project of end of studies-(PFE).
The units of teaching of this cycle necessarily integrate
– the practical training course, being worth 8 ECTS,
– an initiation with scientific research allowing the student to acquire methodologies specific to the research tasks,
-the preparation of a report, being worth 8 ECTS,
– the public defence of the project of end of studies, being worth 14 ECTS in more of the appropriations attached to the unit of teaching where it is located.
Three fields of studies are proposed each six-month period:
domaine 1 : “art – paysage – design”
domaine 2 : “Architecture, Urbanisme, Territoires”
domaine 3 : “Formes, Architecture, Milieux”
domaine 4 :”Habitat, Culture, Environnement “At the Master level, students are allowed the opportunity to look in greater depth at issues they were introduced to during the Bachelor course. The integration of technical disciplines into the design process continues.
Management practice and law is introduced at this stage in order to prepare students for professional practice. A two-month internship has also to be performed.
The seminaries bring the theoretical knowledge and bases to be implemented by the student in the framework of the associated studio. Students are introduced to research methodologies by the works carried out by the research team of the school. Then they are allowed to pursue a line of supported research through a dissertation.
The Semester 10 is the preparation for the student’s final project  (PFE).
Professional qualification
The title of architect is protected by law.
The PFE does not make it possible to assume the responsibility as director of construction, only project executor and signatory of the permits building. This responsibility can be acquired only after obtaining the capacity to exert the control of construction in architecture.
Completion of this qualification is requested to enter the Register of architects.
One year of study is needed for professional qualification giving the capacity to do prime contracting in architecture. A successful completion of the Master grants admission to the professional qualification. Enabling to exert the control of construction, in of its proper name (HMONP)
After obtaining the diploma of State of architect, the graduates eager to continue towards the control of construction engage in a training in alternation and a personal work of high level architectural project, allowing them to acquire essential competences with this exercise. The professional organizations are associated this period of formation, controlled by the ENSASE and sanctioned by an enabling to exert the control of construction in architecture, delivered by the schools of architecture. This one year formation includes/understands:
– turning professional, in alternation with the training course, which gathers a certain number of professional modules in various fields (economy of the building, technique of building site, right of construction and town planning, contractual management, accountancy, management…)
– a long training course

Master’s in Public space
This master professional heading “spaces public: design, architecture, practicals “result from a partnership between three educational establishments higher of Saint-Etienne: The higher School of architecture, the University Jean Monnet and the higher school of art and design
It’s a formation of level master 2 associating architects, designers and sociologists around the analysis, the design, the requalification and the installation of public spaces, integrating the cultural, practical and economic requirements of the contemporary territories.
This master is designed to accompany the development of professional practices and favours diversification in the pursuit of a career in the field of .

The constant evolution of production tools and practices in the urban and construction sector offers excellent research perspectives. Research is particularly focussed on town transformation mechanisms and on a local level it relies on the region’s old industrial sites that provide excellent opportunities for intervention.
Public space and its role in driving urban mutation receive particular attention.
Programming and concept design processes are another research subject. The analysis of the practices implemented by those involved in urban development and construction procedures gives rise to the definition of new working methods.

Research, essential with the renewal of the taught knowledge and the futurology for the trades of tomorrow, is particularly active on the mechanisms and the policies of transformation of the city and the territory.
The Higher National School of Architecture of Saint-Etienne has had an activity of research for several years, in a close connection with the university Jean Monnet and the network of the schools of architecture of the Rhône-Alpes area
The ENSASE currently lays out of competent teams  :

-rural teritories
and results concretely in conferences and publications.
