Professor in computational morhpogenesis of structures in architectural design. (Full time)
atKU Leuven,Departement Architectuur
You develop research into the potentials of computational modelling and generation of architectural form in which structural design is integrated through its material and constructive characteristics. By integrating feedback loops of computer aided structural design in the architectural design process, possibilities in architectural form are explored and generative drivers of the process investigated.
This research aims to develop innovative structural shapes, to explore and provide qualitative structural possibilities in architectural design, and to develop new insights and approaches in designing and materialising of architectural constructions in relation to the field of Structure. It strives to enrich the architectural discourse and to instigate a qualitative and creative interdisciplinary design process.
Your research connects with the current research vision of Constructing Architecture & Materialisation of the Department of Architecture. It is interdisciplinary as the Department of Architecture strives for intensive collaborations across disciplines, and between theory and design.
Your research strengthens the Bachelor and Master programmes in architecture and interior architecture, and in the International Master of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture.
Specifically, the following is expected:
- You will strengthen the existing research lines and provide complementary expertise
- You develop a research programme at an international level and supervise PhDs
- You are familiar with the professional field and strive through your research for interaction with the design studios. You value collaboration with the design practice.
- You establish national and international collaboration networks within and outside the department, on local as well as international level.
- You are capable of acquiring competitive funding and developing collaboration with the industry.
- You strive to excel in research and you publish on a high scientific level, hereby contributing to the continued development of the department and faculty.
You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty through the supervision of master theses and as a supervisor of PhD students. You teach several theoretical courses focusing on their application in the design studios and their contribution to a coherent pedagogical curriculum.
The teaching assignments are in Dutch and English.
The candidate is committed to take the lead in the academic management, will participate in the further development of the architecture programmes and is also willing to take up a role in scientific and societal engagement. Scientific, social and internal services are part of your appointment, e.g. by maintaining close contacts with the professional field of engineers and architects with an exemplary design practice.
Moreover, the candidate will play an active role in the visibility and image of the department and faculty for new students and the broader professional field. This can be achieved through participation in public performances, open days, introduction sessions and so on.
You have a PhD on a topic related to the intended field of research and education. Design experience as architect and/or engineer is recommended. For this function we favour candidates with knowledge of and experience in engineering sciences and constructive building as well as architectural designing.
You have a strong research profile. The quality of your research is proven by leading publications and/or realisations. International (research) experience is an important asset. You are expected to formulate a research plan with initiatives and research threads for the first 5 year period.
You are familiar with architectural designing and contemporary tendencies in architecture.
Experience in academic teaching is recommended, and is assessed by a list of courses taught, an educational plan for future courses at the faculty (pedagogical concept, teaching material, table of contents of the courses), and/or a test lecture on a predetermined topic.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You possess leadership capacities within a university context.
Proficiency in English is required.
The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.
Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.
We are offering a fulltime employment in a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. If applicable, a part-time appointment can be considered. Our university is highly inter- and multidisciplinarily focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard we actively work together with research partners in Belgium and abroad and provide our students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research. Its internationally renowned research and educational programmes cause it to consistently rank among the best 50 universities worldwide.
The Faculty of Architecture is committed to practice-oriented academic teaching in a university setting. Its inspiration is artistic, leading to critical, innovative and path-breaking thinking. There is room for dialogue and debate and the international dimension is ever present. You will work on the campuses of the Faculty of Architecture in Ghent and Brussels. The Department of Architecture is active on campuses in Ghent, Brussels and Leuven.
Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
KU Leuven is well set to welcome foreign professors and their family and provides practical support with regard to immigration & administration, housing, childcare, learning Dutch, partner career coaching, …
To facilitate scientific onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase a starting grant of 100.000 euro is offered to new professors without substantial other funding, appointed for at least 50%.”
