Council member
Madeleine Maaskant (1966) is director of the Academy of Architecture, part of the Amsterdam
University of the Arts. She studied architecture at Delft University of Technology from 1984 to
1990, graduating from the Master’s course in Architecture with honours. After winning the
biennial Europan competition in 1996, she (co)founded the firm Maaskant and van Velzen
Architects, with which she was associated until 2010.
Madeleine Maaskant gained administrative experience in the architectural field as a board
member of Europan Nederland, the Jaap Bakema Foundation, DSL and LOBO. She was also a
member of the editorial board of the architecture journal Oase from 2000 to 2006.
Madeleine Maaskant has served on a variety of committees including the Architecture Committee
of the Dutch Creative Industries Fund and on various juries. During her career, she has taught at
various architecture schools.
From 2010 to 2015, she was responsible for the Buildings Department of the nature conservation
organization Natuurmonumenten and chairman of the board of the Archiprix Foundation, the
partnership of higher education institutions in the field of architecture, urban design and
landscape architecture
