Faculty profile

The Department of Architecture that belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra (DARQ) began in 1988. Among other schools of architecture, the Department of Architecture also known as DARQ is distinguished by its moderate size, with about 500 students and 40 teachers, with the purpose of maintaining this size. The study plan is based on learning-centered workshops of Architectural Design, but understanding it as a field of cultural production that joins classes of scientific, technological and humanistic order. The Department of Architecture is increasingly betting on deepening the quality of the theoretical, technological and cultural training for their future architects, teachers and researchers.

Student Activities

Services: The Architecture Student Council (NUDA) of the Department of Architecture (DARQ) started in 1997-1998 with the goal of boosting DARQ activities, encouraging students intellectually and increase their interest in areas related with the professional environment.

Editorial: Operating since 1996, e | d | arq aims to provide a service with its own identity and an image qualified to support and encourage the development of mechanisms for teaching and learning within the Department of Architecture FCTUC.

– The curriculum provides acquisition of generic and professional competencies.

The 1st Cicle of Study, equivalent to a bachelor, is received after the successful completion of the III year of this five-year integrate programme, then the students acquire an undergraduate degree. This degree does not allow access to the profession of architect but does allow assisted participation in architectural and urbanistic activities.

The professional skills are obtained after successful completion of the 2nd Cicle or 5th Year of the Master Programme it provides the legal competencies to the architecture profession.

In this proposed Programme the core subject is the Architectural Design Studio, it is offered from the first to the fifth year of the graduation.

As 3rd Cicle of Study there is a PHD in Architecture, which main theme is Architectural and Urban Culture. It has a extensive ECTS grade, accounting 200 credits. The curricular period is reserved for the first three semesters and the conclusion of the programme is previewed to the seventh semester.

The Master of Architecture (FCTUC) aims to train responsible architects, capable of technical, artistic and civic viewpoints, able to perform architectural designs that take into account the individual needs, the country, each region, and environmentally sustainable development of cities and rural areas. Besides preparing graduates with all information concerning the profession of architect, the objective of this course is to provide solid studies and enabling the continuation of studies through postgraduate studies.
