Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. With around 2600 students and 500 staff members, with around 230 FTEs devoted to academic positions, our faculty is one of the largest of Delft University of Technology and one of the most prestigious architecture and the built environment faculties globally. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment. The faculty has a budget of around €38 million, of which approximately €7 million is sourced indirectly and from contracts with third parties.
The chair of Methods & Analysis holds a key position in the Department’s research programme. As one of the three research-oriented chairs in the department (History, Theory and Methods & Analysis), it plays a leading role in PhD guidance and in the general organisation of research within the department. Members of the chair are participating in different research groups investigating themes such as “Architecture Cultures and Societies” and “Situated Architecture”, while the chair as a whole has defined architectural pedagogy as one of its key topics of investigation.
The new faculty member will be able to take on an active role in the department’s research and education programme. The Assistant Professor will lecture, tutor and (co-) supervise in the PhD programme, design studio’s and seminars in the Master programme of the Chair and may contribute as well to lectures in the Bachelor programme (Grondslagen/Foundations).
The Chair of Methods & Analysis in the Department of Architecture is offering a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor.
The Chair of Methods & Analysis holds that architecture, more than a response to programme or problem solving, is about the development of distinct approaches and tools. The chair wants to challenge preconceptions about architectural methods and instruments, inspire the advancement of inventive approaches, while enabling critical action in the built environment. In its education, the Chair of Methods and Analysis aims to be a laboratory for students who want to explore pioneering ways to analyse, understand and intervene in the built environment. Taking the role of the architect as one that is socially engaged and locally specific, the chair is seeking for informed, cultured and engaged methods of thinking and practicing architecture.
Both in research and education, the Chair has a strong interest in expanding the conventional architectural methods of drawing, writing and modelling by seeking connections with other artistic disciplines, learning from the way in which architectural environments are evoked in art, literature or cinema.
The committee is particularly interested in an Assistant Professor who will complement and build upon the expertise of the current members of the chair, notably in methods of architectural analysis and imagination.

Applicants must have a proven background in architecture and a PhD degree in an appropriate discipline, related to architectural methodology. The candidate is expected to be an enthusiastic teacher at university level; the candidate is expected to be committed to research excellence as demonstrated by academic publications. He/she has shown the ability to initiate and direct research projects and is expected to have experience in writing grant proposals to obtain external funding. In addition, the candidate is expected to have an international profile with an active international network in academia and practice.
The candidate possesses good social and communication skills and should fit the chair as a team member. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Dutch is appreciated but not required at the start of the position.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer a permanent faculty position.
